The next few chapters of "The Fourth Life" may be difficult for some, so be alerted, but to Todd lovers everywhere - stick with it!
Writing Todd, if understanding the character, will lend itself to things going wrong more often than not, and readers should expect that to continue through my books, and probably a great deal of the fanfictional Todd books out there.
The Fourth Life is intended to be about Todd and Blair beginning their fourth life together. Todd will STILL be dealing with the fallout from the 8 years, which is how it should be. It should not have been swept under the rug, ignored, or pushed aside and barely mentioned. It will include more horrors that he endured that play into the entire scheme of the series.
Of course, more things that Todd remembers about this time in captivity will be revealed and it will not be pretty, but it's part of my interpretation of his story to have constant struggles to be whole, have and keep his family and find a way to keep surviving. Those of you who know this character know also that his main goal is to be with his wife and family.

All of these things and the things he and Blair go through in the rest of this book, as well as the successive ones, are to show two things: How he can overcome the challenges he faces and WHY he is the person he is and how his childhood experiences and previous years have had a hand in it. As a character as I write him, Todd will continually ebb and flow through bliss and peril. It's just Todd, and of course, Blair is always an integral part of this. While he experiences terrible things and losses, it will lead to healing (until the next time . . .)
To end this note, I am quoting a reader of mine who wrote in an email recently:
"What's always been magical about Todd/Blair is that no matter how much pain you've caused, or lived through; there's always a way through, and a way out. It's why I loved watching Todd Manning really, it's never too late to learn from your mistakes, or turn around;it's always worth the struggle to heal our scars inside and out. It's where the lines between heroes, anti-heroes, and villains disappear, and it's called being simply human."

That pretty much sums up my philosophy of Todd and the things he will face in his stories all over the internet, including mine.
